BigDreaming

Often we journey through life without honouring our individual gifts and aspirations.

The following five stages facilitated in BigDreaming allow individuals to identify and achieve their life goals and aspirations through experiential learning and mentorship.

Stages

STAGE ONE

Listen

Development of personalised BigDream for Success

  • Intensive 10 day program, three hours per day, minimum one / maximum five participants.

  • Trauma focused program that recognises the importance of healing processes.

  • Locally driven, including skill and capacity-building from a strengths-based approach.

OVERVIEW

  • The 10 Day program is individualised to suite each participant.

  • Aboriginal-led model that supports social and cultural needs of Aboriginal people.

  • A trauma focused program that recognises the importance of healing processes to support BigDream for Success.

  • A culturally safe program that aims to remove individual behavioural and institutional structural barriers.

  • A locally driven program that includes skill and capacity building from a strengths-based approach.

  • Supports each participant to complete a skills audit which identifies individual gifts for BigDream Success.

  • Supports each individual’s career pathway trajectory based on their aspirations which incorporates their cultural identity and relational. Aboriginal kinship systems and lore; essential factors that influence accessibility and engagement within the program.

  • A community-led pre-selection process ensures community elders gauge nominee suitability through community activities created in partnership with Beyond Dreaming.

PROGRAM

Evidence based activities to help participants develop an understanding of:

  • cultural identity and diversity.

  • intergenerational trauma.

  • anxiety and depression.

  • confidence, leadership and self-awareness.

  • empathy and compassion.

OUTCOMES

Each team engages one-on-one to encourage within participants the development of:

  • individual personal agency.

  • individual mapping of personal aspirations.

  • an understanding of natural skills, talents and gifts.

  • an understanding of how to set goals and plan for achievement.

  • an understanding of how to contribute positively to their community.

  • an understating of design and lateral thinking.

  • academic, creative and emotional maturity.

  • Each participant receives a certificate of participation.

STAGE TWO

Observe

Self-discovery trip away from home

  • Intensive five day experiential immersion program, minimum one / maximum five participants.

  • Engage in experiences based on your own skills and identified individual gifts.

  • For participants who have completed stage one.

OVERVIEW

  • Learning away from home is the most effective method to minimise compounding distractions. Distancing participants from members of their everyday environment helps to open minds, slow down, broaden perspectives and inspire creativity.

  • The five day program is an experiential immersion program that is individualised to each participant.

  • Each participant engages in different individualised experiences based on their own skills and identified individual gifts identified in Stage 1 for BigDream for Success.

  • Each participant engages in different individualised experiences that support their BigDream Map that they created based on their own individual career pathway trajectory and aspirations.

PROGRAM

Participants:

  • Engage in experiences identified in their BigDream for Success based on their individual map of aspirations and identified skills.

  • Assess what evidence supports and/or undermines their perceptions.

  • Evaluate what might be holding them back from achieving their desired BigDream for Success.

  • Understand how else they can perceive their own situation.

  • Document their personal thoughts, observations and ideas about themselves, their family and their community.

OUTCOMES

  • Consolidation of identified unique gifts and how to use these gifts in a meaningful career.

  • Increased level of commitment to achieve desired goals.

  • Increased self-awareness and more positive view of self.

  • Heightened prospect for employment.

  • A certificate of participation is awarded to each person.

STAGE THREE

Participate

Reflection and BigDream Planning

  • Intensive 10 day program, three hours per day, minimum one / maximum five participants.

  • Individualised support to plan how to implement your Map for Success.

  • For participants who have completed stages 1 and 2.

OVERVIEW

Designed for participants who have completed Stage One Development of Personalised BigDream for Success and Stage Two Self Discovery Trip Away from Home.

  • Individualised support for each participant to plan how they can implement their individual BigDream Map for Success and what life changes may be needed to support their success and individual journey 

  • Support to consolidate their new perspective with the life and community they are growing in

  • Merging of two worlds for participants through the development of their individual BigDream mapping through identifying and valuing their local contextual and cultural knowledge whilst reflecting on their immersion experience considering their individual position, ethics and values

  • Support the development of building strong support structures which identify the assets that already exist within the community to promote agency and empowerment

  • Reinforce knowledge that already exists within their community to support their BigDream Mapping for Success

  • Building tools and strategies to engage with services to support participants ongoing success of their personalised BigDream Map 

PROGRAM

  • Participants will be required to report to community Elders and leaders about their self-discovery BigDream expedition and the impact the program has had on them

  • Participants will be required to document their personal thoughts, observations and ideas about themselves, their family and their community

  • Pathways available (employment/career/education/ personal interest etc) 

  • Who will support the participant to implement their BigDream Map for Success and achieve their goals 

  • Timeframes for achieving milestones 

  • Opportunities for scholarships, grants & apprenticeships Life skills and mental/emotional support needed to ensure the well-being and success of the participant

OUTCOMES

  • Participants have developed their own unique BigDream Map that is culturally considered and tailored to their identified skills and strengths

  • Create an independent living within a culturally embedded structured framework

  • Identified safety network – services, family, teachers, mentors, elders, community supports

  • Healthy reflection of self and place in their family and community

  • Increase in school/education attendance if applicable 

  • Good social and emotional wellbeing 

  • Development of life skills consistent with their independence 

  • Positive engagement with community services e.g. counselling

  • Graduation (Personalised BigDream Map)

STAGE FOUR

Practice

Ongoing Mentorship and BigDream Implementation

  • One on one mentoring, minimum 2 hours per week

  • Individualised support to plan how to implement your Map for Success

  • For participants who have completed stages 1, 2 and 3.

OVERVIEW

  • Ongoing support, mentoring and training underpinned by cultural safety, empowerment and enablement of skills based on the participants cultural identity

  • Culturally considered mentoring, case management and life coaching to meet participants individual goals identified within their BigDream Map

  • Mentoring and support for participants to overcome barriers that prevent them from reaching their BigDream Success

PROGRAM

Each participant will be assigned a mentor who will engage with them one-on-one to encourage thinking about:

  • Their natural skills, talents and gifts and how they could apply these to growing their cultural identity, study, career and employment opportunities

  • How to evaluate their goals and continue to set new goals and how to plan for achievement

  • How they can contribute positively to the future of their community

  • Design and lateral thinking

  • Developing academic, creative and emotional maturity.

OUTCOMES

  • Engaged Aboriginal Community

  • Applying for a scholarship

  • Applying for a traineeship or apprenticeship

  • Enrolling in a course of study

  • Exploring employment opportunities

  • Starting a small business

  • Engagement in volunteering

  • Starting or getting involved in a community project

  • Proactive member of community

  • Employment and independence

  • Development of life skills, mental wellbeing strategies, social skills etc

  • Positive pathways for success

  • Participants feel empowered to make positive life choices, have developed strong identity, culture and cultural identity.

  • Increased self-confidence and self-worth

  • Increased psychosocial, clinical and health outcomes

  • Skills to connecting with services that support participant’s BigDream Map

  • Wrap around services

  • Reduced risk of homelessness

  • Better management of income

  • Taking responsibility within community to help others in need
